History & Heritage

One of the oldest incense materials in the world, sandalwood has been in use for at least 4,000 years. The sandalwood tree grows almost exclusively in the forests of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, India. As the tree matures — requiring 60 to 80 years to reach full maturity — precious oil develops in its roots and heartwood. The tree is never felled, but uprooted in the rainy season when the roots are richest in oil. It is one of the most calming and revered incenses in the world, prized above all for meditation.
