How to Burn: Fill a cup, bowl, or incense burner with earth or sand. Light charcoal on the bottom edge until it begins to ignite, then set it on the earth or sand. Let sit briefly until the coal glows, then place loose sage leaves on the charcoal. Coals burn for approximately one hour — continue adding leaves as needed. Note: once lit, charcoal cannot be extinguished and re-lit.

Also beautiful burned directly as a smudge or loose herb.
