According to Greek legend, the nymph Clytie loved the sun god Helios (Apollo) so deeply and so unrequitedly that she spent all her days gazing toward the sun, waiting for him to return her affection. In time, the gods transformed her into a flower — the heliotrope — forever turning her face toward the light. The name itself comes from the Greek hēliotropion: hēlio (of the sun) and tropos (to turn). It is the flower of devoted, sun-seeking love.
